Electrical Apparatus magazine, July 2015

“Class is in session,” from the July 2015 issue of Electrical Apparatus,  tells how a community saved one of the few high school electricity programs in the country. Last summer, administrators with Chicago’s Simeon Career Academy high school decided to cancel the program, claiming budgetary concerns and lack of interest. This article relates how the program’s teacher, Latisa Kindred, along with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 134, was able to get the course reinstated for 2014-15 school year — and sheds light on how high school vocational programs have fallen by the wayside and why it’s important to keep them as options for young people.
