What do we mean by ‘motor temperature’?

The answer can vary widely, depending on where and how measurements are taken. “There is no practical way of knowing either where the hottest spot in any motor winding may be, or what its temperature will be,” writes Engineering Editor Richard Nailen in this article. “No matter how many sensors are placed in what locations, their readings can only support an estimate.” His article shows several ways in which these estimates can be made.
