FAA issues statement on aerial situation in New Jersey in latest update

There have been at least 5,000 drone sightings in the skies over areas of New Jersey over the past week, leading to confusion and general panic among residents and officials.

The F.A.A. said in a statement that it had temporarily restricted drone flights over “critical New Jersey infrastructure” at the request of what it described as “federal security partners.” The F.A.A. referred all additional questions to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

"At the request of federal security partners, the FAA published 22 Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) prohibiting drone flights over critical New Jersey infrastructure," the December 19 statement said on the FAA website.

The ordered bans, also known as TFRs, cover 2-nautical-mile-wide areas around infrastructure points, including PSE&G electrical substations, a nuclear power plant, ports and trucking warehouses.

You can search for TFRs here. "Please contact DHS for additional information," the FAA added.
