Schaeffler unveils work with Hyundai

Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions has introduced a new repair kit for electric motors, showcased at Automechanika Frankfurt September 7. The new E-Axle RepSystem-M addresses the need for cost-effective repairs in the e-axles of the Hyundai Ioniq’s first-generation models, specifically the 2016-2019 AE-EV with an EM09 motor.

Historically, issues with electric motors often required replacing the entire motor or axle. The E-Axle RepSystem-M changes this paradigm by enabling the replacement of defective bearings, significantly reducing repair costs and downtime. The kit includes all necessary components, such as bearings, seals, O-rings, and detailed repair instructions.

Schaeffler’s latest innovation is particularly timely, given the 44,000 Hyundai Ioniq vehicles currently in Europe, which span 5 to 8 years of age. The company’s new kit is expected to be a game-changer in the e-mobility market, providing a viable alternative to full motor or axle replacements.

Maik Evers, Head of Product Management Powertrain Systems at Schaeffler, highlighted the company’s commitment to expanding its e-mobility portfolio. This release builds on previous successes, such as the E-Axle RepSystem-G for Volkswagen e-Golf transmissions introduced in 2022.

In addition, Schaeffler, in partnership with GEDORE Automotive, has developed the “E-Drive Stator Lift,” a tool designed to facilitate the professional repair of electric motors by enabling safe, contact-free handling of the rotor and stator.
