Questions emerge about whether cause of L.A. blaze was electrical
Among all of the finger-pointing occurring in the wake of the Los Angeles fires - and there's been a lot of it --- people are understandably asking if the Los Angeles fires may have been sparked by faulty electric utility equipment.
A USA Today article reports that fire agencies are investigating whether sparks from electrical equipment may have started the disastrous conflagration:
And the Los Angeles Times published a story that the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has notified police of threats to DWP workers, one possibly involving a rifle,
Southern California Edison is required by law to file "incident reports" whenever something occurs in its operations that could pose a hazard to the public. Here's a page where the public may view these incident reports:
Examples from a 1/10/25 report include in part:
"The Hurst Fire is a brush fire reported in the Sylmar area at approximately 10:10 p.m. on January 7, 2025. Preliminary information reflects the Eagle Rock - Sylmar 220 kV circuit experienced a relay at 10:11 p.m. A downed conductor was discovered at a tower associated with the Eagle Rock - Sylmar 220 kV circuit, but SCE does not know whether the damage observed occurred before or after the start of the fire."
There has been no determination that this incident (or any other incidents that might be reported subsequently) actually started the Hurst fire, but the existence of this and other reports has sparked its own fire and fury. The
